I looked a video entitled " How arts gives shape to cultural change " by Thelma Golden. It's talking about black culture through paintings.
I choose the table of art at the 11.54 in this speech. on this picture we can see that the dominant color is the white. This work represents a hand of a black man who holds snow. In background, we have vast extended from ice or snow with an outline of mountain and a blue sky strewn with clouds. what I like in this work, it is that it appears very pure. The snow in the hand looks like a cloud and it's like the man can touch the sky. It's simply a mark of hope, freedom and change. All this is underlined by contrast between the decoration very pure, very white, very clearly and the arm and the hand with the black skin. That accentuates the attention of the glance.
Moreover, the man tightens his hand forwards that proves that he tightens his hand towards the future, that he believes and he hopes in the future : the worst is behind him.
So I think this picture is just a message of hope and liberty. So i like very much this work.
Now, I'm going to try to answer at some questions :
1) How do images work, according to Thelma Golden ?
It's a spectacle with the works made by artists whose instruction was to represent the life such as they see it and to define it by passion. Works represent problems of the life or what the artists would like to see changing. Art makes it possible to be expressed, to be made hear and understand. I think Art gives shape to cultural change. It's like an mark of about history. And it's more effective than a book or a classroom because you can imagine the works and you can interpreted the message alone and it's more interesting.
2)Which questions does she raise about the role a museum plays in a society ?
According to Thelma Golden, museum is very important in society for artists and works. In fact, museum is a public place which gathers and exposes collections of works of art, objects and documents which are of cultural interest. It's a place of questions and answers. Thelma Golden think that museum is " the space for contest of ideas" . In short, the museums make it possible to pose reflexions on cultures and to change them.
I'm agree with Thelma Golden when she says “think about artists not as content providers […] but again as real catalysts” because artists gives their ideas through their works. The work of the artists push us to the reflexion. Indeed, when we are vis-a-vis a work, we put questions and we start to see the point of view of the artist and we conform to this point of view. They share their ideas and they push with the debate what involves changes. That's why the artists are catalysts. They cause the change by striking practices what enables us not to forget the message of it.
I'm tottally agree with you when you speak about the painting... Nice article !
ReplyDeleteIf you are interested by this subject (the racial discrimination) I read an interesting and stirring book in english: A lesson before dying. This story is very beautiful and sad but we can see the opposition between the black and white people in America.
